Decoration Description
On front, a hunter with a dog. The young hunter moves to left, looking round. He holds a javelin in his right hand with two fingers in the loop, ready to cast it, and in his left hand another javelin. He also holds a short club (lagobolon) used both for throwing and for dispatching game. A lean hound is beside him, and stands with head, tail, and one foreleg raised, his ears pricked, at attention. The hunter wears a short chiton, a chlamys, shoes, stockings, and a petasos, and has a sword in a scabbard.
Beazley suggests that the hunter may be Kephalos, pursued by Eos, because of the similarity to a fragment of a skyphos from the Acropolis in Athens, which is an almost exact replica of the hunter, but here pursued by Eos.
