Decoration Description

Tondo: woman sacrificing. A woman facing left pours wine from an oinochoe in her right hand onto a burning altar. She is wearing a chiton, himation, fillet and hooped earrings. In her bent left arm she is holding a ceremonial basket. The altar rests on a two-stepped base. Behind the woman a thymiaterion smokes; it stands on a square block. The tondo is bordered by a continuous band of left meanders, superimposed in one place at the woman's right foot, where the pattern meets itself.

Added red is used for the flames on the altar and bloodstains on its side, wine, the tassels of the woman's belt, and the fumes from the thymiaterion.

Side A: Youth and man courting women. On the far left, a youth in himation and wreath leans on a staff and looks at the woman before him. In his left hand he holds a purse, while his right holds a flower. The woman is sitting in a chair with her body facing left and her right arm outstretched toward the youth, but with her head turned to look over her right shoulder. The woman is dressed in chiton, himation and sakkos, and she holds a flower in each hand. Behind her a bearded man stands in much the same position as the youth; he is dressed identically to the youth and holds the same objects. He reaches his left hand out toward a woman, who stands facing him at far right. She is wearing a chiton, himation, and fillet and has a flower in her right hand. On the wall behind her hangs a flutecase with mouthpiece box. Under the handle is a circumscribed palmette. Between the two couples in the center of the scene hangs a sponge, strigil and a net bag with marbles. Behind the youth on the far left stands a stool with striped cushion. Added red is used for the flowers and the males' wreaths.

Side B: men courting women. On the far left a woman stands facing the man before her. She is wearing a chiton, himation, earrings, and fillet and is holding two pipes in her right hand and a flower in her left. She faces a man in front of her, who leans on his staff and grips it in both hands. He is bearded and wears a himation and wreath. Behind him sits a woman facing away to the right. The woman is dressed in chiton, himation, sakkos and earrings and is holding a fillet. She is sitting on a klismos with a cushion. She is looking at a standing man on the far right who leans on a staff gripped in his left hand and holds a flower in his right. Like the first man, he is bearded and is wearing a himation and wreath. On the wall between this man and the woman before him hangs a sponge and strigil, while a mirror hangs between the two couples in the center of the scene. Added red is used for the fillets, wreaths, and flowers.

Except for the reserved hair outlines, relief contours appear throughout. Narrow reserved bands run around both the inner and outer edges of the rim and beneath the scenes on sides A and B. The underside of the foot is reserved except for a black band set back from the resting surface.

Graffiti

A graffito appears on the bottom of the foot.
