Decoration Description
The base of the vessel is decorated with a ray pattern, above which is a band of plaits. Above this is an animal frieze depicting three hounds closing in on a hare. A thin black line separates this frieze from the main one above. Here Bellerophon is on the winged horse Pegasos, flying to the left to attack the Chimaera. There is a tiny lizard in between them. Behind the Chimaera and Bellerophon are two walking sphinxes, facing a floral column. The field is decorated with dot-rosettes, crosses, pendent spirals, and chevrons. Above the main frieze is another black line, and above that on the shoulder is a band of lotus flowers backed by palmettes (compare to Friis Johansen, 119, fig, 77). On the top of the rim is a band of spirals, around which is a tongue pattern. The handle is decorated with a guilloche pattern.
