Decoration Description
The tondo is bounded by a meander band interspersed with crossed squares. The tondo scene depicts a youth holding out a kylix in his left hand, to be filled by a bearded man standing in front of him, holding an oinochoe. Behind both figures stands a large volute krater that presumably holds the wine-water mixture being consumed. The front half of a klismos can be seen behind the bearded man. The youth is naked except for a wrap slung over his left shoulder and a headband. In his left hand he holds a stick. The man, too, is naked with a headband and a wrap, but his is more carefully draped around both his shoulders. He too holds a stick in his right hand.
Both sides of the exterior show five figures, youths and men, playing instruments, drinking and dancing. The middle figure on both sides is the musician; on side A he plays the double flute, on side B, a large stringed instrument. To the left on both sides are two opposed figures conversing and gesturing, the righthand figure on side A holding a bowl. This figure is a youth; his partner, who holds a stick, is not preserved above the shoulders and so cannot be identified by age. On side B both figures on the left are bearded men holding sticks. The two figures to the right of the musician on both sides are dancing, on side A in a lively manner, with the lefthand figure kicking up his foot and facing his partner, on side B more sedately, with both figures facing the musician and moving at a walking pace. The lively dancer on side A holds a stick, as does the far righthand figure on side B. The dancer nearer the musician on side B holds a bowl. On side A the lively dancer is a bearded man, while his partner is a youth. On side B the ages are reversed. All ten revelers are naked except for wraps over their shoulders and arms and headbands. Below both scenes a band of meanders broken by crossed squares circles the vase.
The interior of the handles is red, as is the side of the foot. Below and to the side of both handles are palmettes and tendrils.
